HOW WE HEAL

SYNC YOUR MOVEMENT
WITH YOUR BREATH

Healing begins in the body through movement that releases suppressed energy associated with stress and trauma locked in your body.

Asanas (yoga postures) help to regulate breathing and balance the nervous system. Pranayama (breathwork) helps to clear physical and emotional obstacles.

We have returned to private teaching to honor each person's unique constitution and minimize triggers that can arise in large, all-level, public classes. Schedule your private yoga session today.

BODY

FOCUS YOUR MIND
TRUST YOUR BODY

When the pace of life is fast, the mind speed up in response. Your thoughts race and your nervous system goes into over-drive.

Meditation strengthens mental and physical resilience. By sitting with feelings of discomfort, your ability to regulate feelings and emotions will markedly improve.

We sit together for support and accountability to start, grow or maintain our meditation practice. We meditate during the workweek as a collective.

MIND

HONOR YOUR LIGHT
AND YOUR SHADOW

Nothing is purely good or bad. The truth is we need both. Light doesn't exist apart from darkness.

With humility and compassion, acknowledge and accept your shortcomings—the wounded parts, you may dislike. When you try to hide, excuse, or suppress aspects of your personality, they simply expand, over shadowing your light.

Embracing all your parts is essential for healing and reclaiming your truest self.

SPIRIT

FOLLOW Your Path
To Healing

Real growth doesn’t happen by simply listening and absorbing—it’s the result of engaging, participating, and actually doing the work.

Yoga is one of the best-validated therapies in the entire field of integrative medicine. This brave path takes you from anxious, unconscious, and reactional to calm, mindful and responsive.

THE 8 LIMBS OF YOGA

Anxiety serves as an alert to imbalance. It is a protector.
The actual disorders lie in the systems of oppression in which
we live and suffer.

Chronic stress, anxiety, and depression reside in both our bodies and thoughts.

Through our practices, we strengthen our resilience to reclaim our truest selves.

How does yoga help reduce anxiety?

Yoga is a spiritual practice, not a religion or exercise.
It requires no specific ritual or dogma. Yoga means
"to yoke" or unite. It's something you do.

Yoga—both a noun and a verb—aims to achieve full consciousness and balance of mind, body, and spirit.
It's a powerful and effective tool for regulating breath, balancing the nervous system, and quieting the mind.

How is The Anxious Yogi different?

The Anxious Yogi uses the Eight Limbs of Yoga as the framework for our members' journey. Since anxiety requires a comprehensive approach, we progress from physical form (asana) through expanded sensory awareness to full consciousness (samadhi).

How we might work together?

You're in the right place if :

  • You are new to yoga and exploring

  • You experience social anxiety in group classes

  • You feel disconnected from your body

  • You want to manage stress and anxiety more effectively to reduce their impact on your daily life

  • You want to prevent burnout or panic attacks

  • You want to complement your therapy work

Note: If you are in crisis and need help from a licensed professional or you do not fully support our code of conduct and harassment-free experience for all, then we are  not the right fit for you.

Client Reviews

"Driving has always triggered my anxiety. Now, when I'm behind the wheel feeling anxious and white-knuckling the steering wheel, I hear Avenelle's voice reminding me to take slow, deep breaths and loosen my grip. I can stay present, calm my nerves, and actually enjoy the scenery."

Lisa S.

"Amazing experience! I booked several yoga sessions with Avenelle. As a beginner with little yoga experience, I appreciated how attentive she was and how well she ensured proper form in each pose."

Alondra K. RN

"I asked Avenelle to help me recover from various injuries and to improve my strength, flexibility and balance. She has done that and so much more. She brings her warmth, ease and presence to every session. She designs each class to build on my strengths, while encouraging me to listen to the wisdom of my body. With Avenelle, I feel safe and held. We laugh and breath together and I re-member myself, gently aligning heart-mind-body-spirit."

  • I'm new to yoga. What do I need?
First and foremost, an open, beginners mind. Arrive open to a new experience, growth and transformations, both on and off the mat. As far as equipment, you may want a yoga mat, a yoga strap and blocks. Of course, hardwood floors, a rope and a stack of books will work too. So, don't stress it. We recommend wearing clothing you feel comfortable in and that allows a full range of motion. Layers may also help to adjust for temperature changes during and after class. Also, try not to eat within 1-2 hours of class.
  • How do the eight limbs work as a framework?
The Eight Limbs of Yoga were created as guidelines to help us navigate life holistically. By gaining proficiency in the first four limbs, you’ll learn to regulate your breath and thoughts. Through self-reflection, you'll gain a better understanding of your triggers, and what you need to recover. You’ll learn the interplay between the mind and body, which are intricately connected through the breath in the following three limbs. The eighth and final limb arises, over time, as a result of practicing the first seven limbs. Samadhi is an enlightened state that culminates through practice. It's not something we can actually teach. 01 LIMB - YAMAS Create harmony and peace between you and the world with boundaries. 02 LIMB - NIYAMAS Build routines, habits and rituals to care for your body mind and spirit. 03 LIMB - ASANA Move the body, to ground the mind and lift the spirit. 04 LIMB - PRANAYAMA Increases the oxygen supply to your brain for a calmer, more relaxed state. 05 LIMB - PRATYAHARA Untether and withdraw from sensory over-stimulation. 06 LIMB - DHARANA Quiet the mind, progressing from attention, to focus, and concentration. 07 LIMB - DHYANA Meditate to reprogram your neural pathways and self-regulate. 08 LIMB - SAMADHI There is no separation. You are connected to all living beings.
  • What's the difference between Therapeutic and Recovery yoga sessions?
All yoga is therapeutic. In both sessions, you will move the body, focus the mind, and use breathing practices to down-regulate your nervous system. Recovery yoga sessions are an excellent way to tend an injury. Each session is tailored to help you reach your goals. Our focus shifts from regulation and balance to healing and restoration.
